New York Minute

Hello everyone!

I’ve just posted a video diary of my time in New York. I flew in for a quick visit to attend a Vogue party, but what I really enjoyed were all the other itinerary items I created myself.

You know how Tori says she hates Christmas parties? Well, I don’t hate parties, but I think they’re a lot different than they used to be when I actually was partying…for one, I’m 3 years sober so if there isn’t a good mock-tail, things become very boring quickly. Secondly, when I was in the thick of it (parties after Bowie shows, major label events etc) phones weren’t really a thing…nor was the portable selfie light…so, it was humorous to be high atop Manhattan, having one of the most killer views of the city, and unsure that most of the attendees were appreciating the incredible view. All the same, it was an adventure to behold…beautiful dresses, impeccable makeup, the MetGala screening on a few big screens in front of us. What do they say? Careful what you wish for because once you get it, you might realize that’s not what you wanted?! I think this is life for most.

What I love is the opportunity to appreciate getting older, when I operate from the inside out more and more. It is calming and renewing.

What also really energized me was getting to do a photo shoot, something I planned, with Alice Plati - Mark Plati’s daughter. Almost 30, she’s become a force of art and photography. She had an opening in her schedule and we got to shoot in the west village which was just unreal. I’m so jazzed to share this image with you:

What I loved was how comfortable I felt. We all recall the Public cover…old Grumpy Gryner taking in Times Square. There was a freedom about this shoot, and Alice and I laughed and turned heads and had a blast.

Getting my makeup done, usually a ho-hum procedure, was actually incredible. The makeup artist Virginia is studying social justice and peacekeeping and it was so fascinating to hear stories from someone who has pivoted from fashion to something that lights her up…the 3 hours we spent together were a highlight for me. We exchanged book recommendations, family stories…just an unexpected treat of the whole trip.

In my video diary which i’ve posted you get to see behind the scenes of my practise with Mark Plati for our City Winery show. Next month we get to rehearse with Doug Yowell, a drummer who has played with everyone from Joe Jackson to Suzanne Vega.

Keep making your own adventures. I love you all. Don’t forget we have our second of 2 Zoom Hangs tonight. I enjoyed seeing everyone on Friday. 6pm EST for our hang, and thanks to the newcomers for being brave and coming Friday. I hope you enjoyed yourself. All of my love to Eric who is going through a tough time. This community is here for you always. I feel honoured that you would trust me and share an hour with us.

Big love, Emm
