February Embraces

I didn’t start up vocal coaching until mid January and the break was wonderful. But since I have started up, my head has been spinning.

My trip to Philadelphia on January 12 however was wondrous. I got to tour legendary radio station WXPN and see the venue inside. I even met a Canadian woman named Raina Douris who left CBC to join the XPN ranks. Bruce Warren the legend that he is was holed up in his office as I walked by and I got to thank him for playing me on World Cafe.

I basically went straight from WXPN to a show at Dawson Street Pub, a little watering hole in the Manayunk neighbourhood of Philly. I felt like I was 20 again, dressing room-less and just grooving to the music. Staying up too late and dreaming of what’s next. I ordered non-alcoholic beer of which they had none. Then a cocktail and then they said “we don’t have anything fancy here”. I ordered Ginger Ale. Jim’s band played and they were actually really good! I got to meet Zeek who was the keyboardist for the Bowie tribute so it was comforting to meet someone so I didn’t have to go completely cold into the next night not knowing anyone.

The next night was Philly Loves Bowie. I was struggling with allergies because of Jim McGuinn’s cats (I stayed at the legendary radio programmer’s house) so I don’t think I sang my best, but it was fun all the same to represent David, tell a few stories and play to a packed house. I shared my dressing room with Camille K, a super talented singer who has been on AGT. I met Gina from the Go-Go’s and a ton of other great folks.

If you’re reading this you probably saw my video by now. And heard my news.

Congratulations …. to….. me! And us! And you! So much new excitement going on.

At the same time, I literally sat down a week ago and crossed out a bunch of things that I can no longer afford to spend my time on. The things with meaning stayed on the page….taking care of health, connecting with all of you, writing songs and singing. Sometimes life really takes over and shadows what we are really meant to do.

I think I feel so invigorated by life and want to dip my toe in so many things. But now it’s becoming apparent that I need to curate my energy. Speaking of energy….

What are you devoting your time to this year? Are there one or two things that you just feel called to do? or called to let go of?

Next stop is London - KillerStar with me opening. I’m singing with KillerStar so I have a lot of songs to learn. I helped Rob Fleming with his new record, introducing the Bowie band to him and almost all of them ended up on the album! We had a slight misunderstanding though. When the first KillerStar single came out, press in the UK started to say that all of us in Bowie’s band had started a new band [Wrong.] We had to iron out that kink and re-route the narrative, and luckily I think we succeeded.

My kids are coming to London and that will be crazy. It will also be crazy to see all the Bowie pals again. Mike Garson has just decided to join us so it really will be a reunion of sorts. I’m grateful they are all still with us.

In pet news….we got a new cat and she is bonkers and beautiful. Her name is Peg, and her full name is Margaret Josephine Rosanna Africa Grohlmes the 1st. We have allergies in our house so we had to get another hypoallergenic cat. She is currently in quarantine waiting to meet her big brother Izzy in person for real. Here’s Michael and Peg.

I’m sure Michael will love that I released this photo to you.

I love you all and hope you love the news in my video.
